The Touring Cap began with a practical problem: keeping a cap on while driving an open car.
The first prototypes treated the cap as the main object and the chin strap as an addition.
Working through the prototypes changed that understanding.
The cap is the familiar object. The detachable chin strap is what changes its purpose.
Ollie Leston, after testing the prototype, put it more simply:
“If this was on a flat cap, people would be all over it.”
That comment stayed with me.
The cap itself does not need to be reinvented. The intervention is the point.
The strap allows the same cap to be worn normally, secured when driving, and released again when the car is parked.
The strap is not an accessory to the product.
It is the product.
The cap is the carrier.
